TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) – After about a decade of planning, a brand new YMCA facility opened its doors in Downtown Tuscaloosa on Monday morning.

The new YMCA of Tuscaloosa is located next to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education building.

The facility replaces the former location on Bryant Drive, which was approximately 60 years old.

This YMCA includes 6,500 square feet of exercise equipment, a spin cycle room and group fitness rooms.

The facility has a child development area, where children can receive care while their parents use the amenities.

There is also an outdoor playground and green space.

People associated with the project believe it will better serve longtime members, plus attract a whole new group of people to the YMCA.

“We’ve been saying for so long that we’re going to open in August 2016, and to walk in this building today and have people waiting outside the door, ready for us to open, it’s just surreal that it’s here,”  YMCA of Tuscaloosa CEO Ashley Waid said.
