Crimson Tide tight end O. J. Howard, in the University of Alabama football program, is surely one of college athletics most renowned current players for his stunning national championship feat. What may be less known about the Autuga, Ala., native son is that humility, prayer and every-day life skills — like changing a flat tire — matter to him.
You can ask the Barnes YMCA summer campers about it because they have the skinny.
In late June, they gathered close around him and four other of UA’s star football players as the college athletes demonstrated how to jump car batteries in front of the Barnes Y. The football players made two visits with the children for such practical life skills, including changing flats, and also Bible study to impart larger guidance. The entire UA men’s basketball team visited the Barnes YMCA in July with a similar program for the campers.
