OUR MOST FREQUENT QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED HERE
What is the YMCA’s mission?
The Y’s mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all. We are excited that our brand new facility will enable us to further our work in our three areas of focus: Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social Responsibility.
What are the YMCA hours of operations?
The Tuscaloosa YMCA Family Center is open M-F from 4:30am to 9:00pm, Saturday from 6:00am to 6:00pm, and Sunday from 1:00pm to 6:00pm.
The Child Development Center is open M-F from 8:00am to 1:00pm, M-Th from 3:00pm-7:00pm, and Saturday from 8:00am to 12:00pm.
What does my membership include?
Your membership gives you full access to our new 6500 sq. ft. Wellness Center, a variety of free group fitness classes, state-of-the-art group cycle classes, free access to the Child Development Center, access to programs and more!
How can I get started if I’m a new member?
Ask our Member Services staff for a tour of our brand new facility! Once you are familiar with the space, check out our Group Fitness calendar and try a class. Or, begin working out on our new equipment in our Wellness Center. Wellness staff are available to help you with any of the equipment or to answer any questions you have. We recommend having one of our staff introduce you to our new, state-of-the-art equipment so you can become familiar with it before exercising!
Can I join a class anytime?
Yes! Members have complete access to all classes, and need only to join in!
The only exception to this is Group Cycle, which has a specific number of bicycles. Passes for group cycle are required and will be available at the Member Services Desk 30 minutes before each class. We ask that each participant acquires a pass at the desk and hand it to the instructor before class begins.
Do I have to pay for classes or are they included in my membership?
All classes are included in membership! Non-members and guests may pay a day pass of $15 to participate in a class.
What can my kids do at the Y?
We now have Child Development for ages walking to 13 years old. Our Child Development Center is a space where children can have fun, complete homework, do crafts, do fun exercise activities, and more while their parents are exercising or taking a group fitness class! This space is free for all members to utilize.
Do you have programs for seniors?
We are pleased to offer classes specifically designed for seniors. Our “Silver Fitness” program is available to all members, especially those in our partner memberships of Silver Sneakers, Silver & Fit, and BeWell (AARP). These classes include Silver Sneakers Classic, Silver Sneakers Yoga, Zumba Lite, Gentle Yoga, and Barre & Body Lite that are held at convenient times in the morning and noon hours.
Can I cancel anytime?
At the Y there is no contract, only an initial 30-day period that is paid at the beginning of the membership. After this time, membership continues to be drafted on a rolling monthly basis until you tell us you would like to discontinue your membership. To do so, we ask you to complete a form at our Member Services desk. All terminations are contingent on a 30-day notice for billing purposes.
When will you have a pool or basketball gym?
The Y continues to vigorously fund-raise so that we can continue to grow! Now that we have moved into our new Wellness facility, we are continuing to focus on raising funds to build a new indoor basketball facility and outdoor pool facility on the grounds of our current location. If you would like to donate to either of these additions, please see any of our staff!
What should I wear/bring with me to work out?
We advise you to wear comfortable clothes – they do not have to be fancy or expensive. We do require all members to wear athletic shoes in the Wellness Center, as well as appropriate attire.
What classes do you have?
The Y has many classes and programs for all ages and activity levels. The best way to view class offerings is by clicking on the “Schedule” tab above!
Is there someone who can show me how to use the machines?
Yes! Our Wellness Staff is well-versed in our new Cybex equipment and is happy to work with you as you learn each machine. If you are interested in a more dedicated orientation, please contact our Wellness Supervisor, Ken Hill.
Are there towels available?
Towel service is available at no extra cost. There are small towels for use while exercising in both the Member Services desk and the Wellness Center. Please ask any of our staff if you are in need of a towel! In addition, there are large towels in both locker rooms for use while showering or using the steam room.
Can I bring guests?
Members are allowed to bring guests at the day pass rate of $15. We ask each guest to bring their ID with them to hold at the Member Services Desk while in the facility.
First-time visitors to our new facility are able to exercise or try a group fitness class for free! Please tell the Member Services staff if it is your first time in the facility to obtain your free day pass.
Can I use other YMCA’s?
The Tuscaloosa Family YMCA participates in the AL/MS reciprocity program, in which any YMCA Member in either AL or MS can visit any YMCA in those states for free! Simply tell the Member Services staff at the other Y location that you are from Tuscaloosa, and you will be able to scan in and use the facility! Likewise, members of other Y’s in AL or MS are able to use our facility as well.
Many Y’s in states outside of AL or MS participate in the AWAY (Always Welcome At the Y) program and have their own policies related to other Y members. If you are unsure, it is best to call the YMCA you will be visiting to see what their policy is.
What is the cost of membership?
The Tuscaloosa YMCA Family Center now takes part in mY House pricing, which allows different family types in our community the flexibility to choose the membership type which best fits their household. These rates vary depending on membership type and age, and can be viewed on our “Membership” tab above!
In addition, the Y is always accepting Scholarship and Financial Assistance applications, which can be applied towards membership dues. No one is turned away from the Y for the inability to pay!
Do you have personal trainers?
Yes! Please see our Personal Training page for details, contact our trainers at firstname.lastname@example.org, or catch our Wellness Supervisor Ken Hill for more details.
Can I put my membership on hold?
Please contact our Membership team if you would like to place your account on hold. We are more than happy to work with you and your membership dues as needed to fit around vacation, medical issues, etc.
