Our Afterschool program is held at the Benjamin Barnes branch during the Fall and Spring semesters!

The Benjamin Barnes YMCA After School Program serves from 65 – 70 children every year. Every school day, children from 16 schools in the Tuscaloosa city and county systems are picked up from schools and delivered to the Barnes YMCA Monday-Friday for recreation, homework and daily snacks. The program also includes individual tutoring, homework assistance, Y Readers literacy initiative and an arts program in painting, music and poetry.

This 2015 fall, the After School program launches its “Jumping Into Success” program, which emphasizes character development.

The After School Program was revamped recently to specialize in curriculum that supports Alabama’s Common Core Standards in reading and math. The collaborations of tutors will better prepare Tuscaloosa’s children for academic success and will lead to better performance and results in standardized state tests.

Fall, Winter, and Spring Break Camps are held also.

Rates:  $35 per week per child for full time,  $25 per week per child for part time (3 days), or a $10 daily fee. DHR Clients and CDRS clients are accepted and sibling discounts are available.

For details on the After School Program, contact Youth Program Director Laura Payton or Youth Program Coordinator Lachanda Wallace  at the main desk (205) 759-4284 or at the Children’s Resources Center (205) 764-9709.

Children at the Benjamin Barnes YMCA After School Program solve math homework and study vocabulary as Stillman College student Jeraun Pogue tutors them in fall 2014. With The University of Alabama, Shelton State Community College and Stillman near the Barnes Branch, helpful tutors from area colleges are available.
